The OYS Wet Feet program provides a safe, fun, and exciting introduction to sailing. We recommend this program for kids from 7 years old to 10 years old. Our program introduces these young sailors to fundamental sailing skills including balancing the boat, steering, rigging and de-rigging the boat and tacking. The Wet Feet program makes use of our extremely stable fleet of Optimist dinghies. For a balanced program, kids can expect their days to be filled with games and activities in addition to sailing. Kids can anticipate to participate in a variety of games and activities to complement their newly learned sailing knowledge. This program is offered in two week sessions and as a one week session running Monday through Friday throughout July and August running from 8:30am to 3:30pm. Although this program is offered as a 1 week program, the skills required for this level may require longer than 1 week to obtain.
The Oakville Yacht Squadron Sailing School has been proudly serving the Oakville community since 1965, teaching many adults and youth to sail at our great waterfront setting.
The safety of students and instructors is the highest priority for the OYS Sailing School. All students and instructors are required to wear a PFD at all times on the water. Students must provide their own PFD. Each coach boat is equipped with a VHF radio to enable instructors to be in constant contact with the school and local rescue units. The school and coach boats are equipped with first aid kits to treat minor medical needs. Daily weather reports from Environment Canada are consulted and the Head Instructor determines if it is appropriate for on the water instruction to be cancelled. Land based activities and instructions are planned in that event. All OYS sailing school instructors are trained and certified by Sail Canada. Each instructor has First Aid & CPR training.
Spring and Fall Training will be made available at a later date for certain programs
